A relative of the Elm this is a native of Japan.

Introduced into the UK in 1861 it won the Award of Garden Merit in 2002.

It thrives on most soils and is well suited to tolerate the rigours of the urban environment.

This is a medium to large tree with a wide spreading and rounded habit.

Its smooth grey bark flakes attractively and its foliage displays fine shades of red and bronze in autumn.

Good for avenues and parkland.

Zelkovas do best in fertile sandy loamy soils.
